My Colicky Baby Routine
Share
A colicky baby is one of the hardest things a new family can go through. The crying, the drawn-up legs, the evenings that never seem to end, and a mum running on empty. This is the routine I suggest to families: gentle support for baby's tummy, help settling at night, and some care for mum too.
My routine
Through the day: Grizzly Guts (3 to 5 drops) with feeds
Unsettled times: Grizzly Guts again as needed, up to 6 times daily
Bedtime: Sleepytime (3 to 5 drops)
For mum: Revive Drops (10 drops) and the 10 Day Colic Friendly Food Plan if you're breastfeeding
Drops can go straight into baby's mouth, on a spoon or in a bottle.
Why these
Grizzly Guts, with feeds and when unsettled. This is my go-to for windy, unsettled tummies. Herbs like Chamomile, Peppermint, Cramp Bark and Lime Flowers are traditionally used to ease spasm and help move trapped wind.
Sleepytime, at bedtime. For helping a little one settle once the tummy has calmed.
Revive Drops, for mum. Broken nights and long evenings drain your reserves. Revive is there to support energy and nourish the nervous system, and it's suitable while breastfeeding.
10 Day Colic Friendly Food Plan, for breastfeeding mums. Sometimes something in mum's diet is upsetting baby. This plan helps you work through the common triggers step by step, so you can find out what's affecting your baby without cutting out everything at once.
My extra tips
- Burp often, during and after every feed.
- Gentle tummy massage in a clockwise direction, and "bicycle legs" to help move wind.
- A warm bath before bed to relax tight little tummies.
- Skin-to-skin and carrying in a sling can be very soothing.
- Ask for help and take breaks. A calm, rested parent makes a big difference.
